Much of Kenya’s remaining forests are surrounding Mount Kenya, the second highest mountain in Africa. Tragically, this surrounding former-fertile land is quickly turning into desert due to agriculture, timber harvesting and charcoal burning.
Since forests help to retain a mountain’s natural water, many of Kenya’s rivers have seen a large decrease in water flow over the last few years. This leads to farmlands becoming infertile and causes food and water shortages for people living in the surrounding areas.
This restoration area is located on a lowland mangrove forest along the Akalamboro Estuary surrounding the Akalamboro community in northwest Madagascar. The northern edge of this estuary is part of the Baie de Baly National Park.
The mangrove forest is unique in that it is a deep-water canal that meets up with an extensive, freshwater river system. This makes it a vital nursery for numerous fish species, abundant Nile crocodile, and multiple bird species, including the endangered Madagascar ibis.
